Senator Steiner Hayward is a family physician at OHSU. She currently serves as the President of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians and as the Director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Breast Health Education Program.
She has been very active in crafting health policy in Oregon. In 2005, she was instrumental in the passage of a bill that required health insurers to cover Clinical Breast Examinations for women. In 2011, she helped lead a large coalition of health care organizations to pass two bills to improve access to high-quality primary care for Oregonians.
As a family physician, she has the ability to understand connections between multiple issues, and the excellent communication and collaboration skills necessary to unite people around common goals.
Senator Steiner Hayward served as a Girl Scout troop leader for ten years, and has been on the board of Congregation Neveh Shalom since 2004. She volunteers frequently at her children's school and in her congregation. She lives in unincorporated Multnomah County with her husband Michael, their two teenage daughters, and her mother-in-law. Her step-daughter and son-in-law live in northeast Portland.
