Jackie Pierce steps in to run for SD 10 seat
Democratic nominee William Dalton is stepping down, endorsing Pierce
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West Salem resident Jackie Pierce announced today her intention to join the race for Senate District 10 as the Democratic nominee. Pierce is seeking the nomination to replace William Dalton, who announced Wednesday that health issues were forcing him out of the fall election.
Pierce expressed her excitement at jumping in and running a tough campaign leading up to November’s election.
“I’m running for the Oregon Senate because I believe I’m the best person to get Oregon back on track while protecting the vital services that Oregonians rely on,” said Pierce.
Dalton is supporting Pierce as his replacement.
Pierce emphasized her background as a psychiatric social worker at the Oregon State Hospital, saying that she has on-the-ground experience that puts her in touch with every day Oregonians.
“As a social worker, I’ve been helping people my entire life. Running for the Senate is the next step for me to give back to our community,” said Pierce.
While working at the Oregon State Hospital, Pierce was a local president and shop steward in her union, SEIU Local 503. Since retiring, she has been active in the local Red Cross and Friends of Bush Park.
“Jackie Pierce is an excellent candidate and we’re pleased to have her on our team,” said Senate Majority Leader Richard Devlin. “We’re taking this race very seriously and in Jackie we have a person who knows her district and what matters to them. This is a race we can win.”
Pierce lives in West Salem with her husband Alan. Senate District 10 covers South and West Salem and much of Polk County, including the communities of Independence and Monmouth.
Marion County Democrats will host the Polk County Democrats next Thursday at 7:00pm for a joint nominating convention for the Senate District 10 seat. The May primary determined the current candidate. Party rules dictate that when a nominated candidate steps down, party delegates from the district vote to fill the nomination. Once the convention has nominated a candidate, the Marion County chair will send a letter confirming the nominee to the Secretary of State’s Elections Division and to the Democratic Party of Oregon.
