Devlin ready to take on challenger in SD 19

Senator from Tualatin cites jobs, small businesses as key to his campaign

Senator Richard Devlin (D-Tualatin) won the Democratic nomination to Senate District 19 yesterday evening without opposition.  Devlin immediately turned his attention to the General Election, promising to use the election campaign as a chance to make progress on the issues he cares about most.

Devlin said that his campaign will focus on looking out for middle class Oregonians, supporting small businesses, and protecting essential services. As the former chief budget writer for Oregon’s schools, Devlin made a point of emphasizing that he has a plan to improve the quality of our schools.

“I know that a quality education makes a real difference in the lives of our kids,” said Devlin. “I will work to make our schools the foundation of our state so they can help us to attract businesses to Oregon and create the jobs we want.”

While Devlin had no primary opponent, his Republican challenger, Mary Kremer, won one of the state’s most bruising primary contests.  Devlin welcomed his opponent to the race and noted that their conservative stance on the issues is out of touch with the voters of Senate District 19.

“When you look at this race by the issues, Mary Kremer is out of step,” said Devlin.  “That said, I respect the primary process and look forward to being on the campaign trail with the candidate that Republicans in my district have put forward.”

A native Oregonian, Devlin serves as the Majority Leader in the Senate. Before being elected to the Legislature, Devlin served on the Tualatin City Council and the Metro Council. Outside of his commitment to public service, Devlin has worked in adult and juvenile corrections and civil and criminal investigations. He lives in Tualatin with his wife Eliza. They have two grown children.
